The International Labour Organization (ILO) describes child labour as being “work that deprives children of their childhood, their potential and their dignity, and that is harmful to physical and mental development.” This often includes mental or physical harm to the child, inference with the child’s education, and in extreme cases, can include enslaving a child. There are three major sectors in which labour falls under: agriculture, industry, and services.
The worst forms of child labour is defined by Article 3 of ILO Convention No. 182. This article describes the most harmful and extreme forms of child labour, including slavery or practices similar to slavery (trafficking of children, child soldier, or other forced labour), having children be used for prostitution or pornographic purposes, having children be used for illicit activities such as the distribution of drugs, or any work that is expected to harm the child’s health. When the nature of the labour risks the well-being of a child physically, mentally, or morally, then it is referred to as “hazardous work.”
